Studies in the Amenability of Kolhapur Bauxite to Bayer's Process-Parts I and 11
DETERMINATION of the digestibility pattern of the bauxite samples is the most important step towards the design of an integrated alumina plant principally based on Bayer's process. Of all the aluminous minerals, the trihydrate gibbsite is the most amenable to Caustic digestion, and diaspore the hardest to treat. Altekar and Mathadt proceeded to determine the mineralogical set-up of the Kolhapur bauxite. The samples were obtained by the senior
author from seventeen different pits dug to an average
depth of 17' in a 30-acre plateau on top of a 3,000' high hill near Udgcri. The deposit has been since estimated at 3'5 million tons of bauxite. The findings of the author were that the principal and predominant mineral of alum-inium is gibbsite and it was therefore predicted that its response to caustic treatment would be quite favourable. Thic paper records the results of detailed investigations concerning the digestion of the bauxit
Beneficiation of Garnets
GARNETS are found in the mica-bearing pegmatites of Nellore district in AndhraPradesh and similar pegmatites of Bihar-Rajasthan.Beach sands also contain some apprec-iable amounts of garnet. Garnets are used as abrasives and as decoration stones. When the garnet becomes completely transparent it is used as precious stone
D.T.A. Studies
ORES and minerals are wasting assets which occur in
nature and their use as raw materials in different mineral based industries needs very systematic and scientific approach in rationalising these resources
for the development of the country's economy so that
they can be utilized for as long a period as possible
to the best of their advantage in terms of quality
and quantity with minimum or no wastage whatsoever.
This rational utilization of the mineral resources
can very well be achieved by adopting the latest ore-beneficiation methods. These methods are well developed
in recent times and can be very much applicable if the beneficiation problems of the low grade ores and minerals are properly understood. A proper understanding of these problems related to them can be achieved by knowing
fully well their basic and most important characteristics
like physical properties, chemical analysis and mineral-ogical nature which would actually reflect the nature of formation of these ores and mineral deposits in a broad manner
Beneficiation of Barytes
BARYTES is an important industrial mineral required by
the paint and pigment manufacture, paper, plastic, linoleum, oil cloth manufacture etc., and also in the
oil well drillings; large deposits of barytes are being mined in Cudapah Dist. of Andhra Pradesh. Recently some more deposits are located in Madhya Pradesh
Benefication Studies on Iron Ores of Bihar
A mixed sample of flue dust mostly of -20 mesh size and weighing 50 kgs, from the blast furnaces of TISCO was received to study whether its impurities can be reduced
to a reasonable level by simple ore-dressing methods, so that it can be used in their sinter mix along with the
iron ore fine
Beneficiation of Beach Sands
THE beach sands from Tainil Nadu, Kerala and Maharastra coasts contain a variety of minerals used for different industries. Monazite is the most important radio-active mineral that is recovered from the beach sands. Other minerals are rutile, garnet, sillimanite, ilmenite, quartz etc
Non-Ferrous Base-Metals Group Minerals
INDIA is far behind to some of the advanced countries in respect of the production and consumption of base metals which are the true indicators of the industrial activity of any country. In fact no mineable reserves of some base metals like tin etc. are present. The chief base metal
minerals in India where some mining and metallurgical
activity is seen and being developed are confined to copper, lead, zinc and aluminium. The production of copper in India hardly meets internal demand. The same is the case with lead and zinc metals. It is only in recent years
that concerted efforts are continued for exploration
and exploitation of new copper, lead and zinc deposits in the country and setting up new copper and zinc smelters for smelting of the indigenous as well as imported concen-trates. But in the case of aluminium industry, it can be considered self-sufficient in respect of the bauxite rese-rves for meeting the requirements of expanding indigenous
industry as well as for export market
Strategic and Fertilizer Minerals Group
STRATEGIC minerals may be defined as those which are highly essential for the defence of a country and in
which the indigenous resources are presently insuffi-
cient to meet the domestic demands. With the present knowledge of resources and reserves position, more
than two dozen minerals have been included as strate-
gic for India. Of these tungsten ores, and molybdenite
are dealt with in detail
Iron Ores of Madhya Pradesh
Large deposits of iron ore are located at Bailadila and Dali-Rajhara, which are being worked at present for
export and to meet the requirement of Bhilai Steel Plant respectively. Bailadila ore being quite rich only a few samples were tested, particularly for the utilization of the -9 mm fines. A large number of samples representing
different parts of the deposit from Rajhara mines were also tested
Beneficiation of Foundry and Glass Making Sands
SANDS basically contain Si0, with varying amounts of impurities like felspars, which contribute alkalies and rendering them useless for foundry work and iron bearing minerals which are objectionable for glass and ceramic industries. Sand samples from various parts of the country were tested for their amenability for use in the foundries and glass making
